Harbor City woke up to a surprise on Sunday morning: its city council is about to get much younger.
An interview with first-time voter Ana Ruiz
Talkcast: Ana, why did you vote this time?
Ana: Rent. My friends and I pay half our salaries for small rooms. One candidate promised 5,000 new homes near the harbor. That is a clear plan. Clear plans are easy to vote for.
Talkcast: What surprised you on election night?
Ana: The lines! So many young people. The news said turnout among voters under 30 doubled. I learned that word today — turnout means how many people actually vote.
Key election words
turnout (n.) — the number of people who vote in an election. Example: High turnout among young voters decided the result.
incumbent (n.) — the person who currently holds an elected position. Example: Two incumbents lost their seats to younger challengers.
landslide (n.) — an election victory by a very large margin. Example: It was not a landslide — the winner led by only 2%.
What happens next
The new council meets next Monday. Housing is first on the agenda. We will follow the story — and keep explaining the English of democracy as it happens.
