I am your host, Diana.

Today, we are talking about a powerful force of nature that has been making headlines all over the world.

According to the latest data from the National Climate Center, a massive El Nino event is forming in

the equatorial Pacific, and scientists predict it could become one of the strongest El Nino events

ever recorded.

But what exactly is El Nino?

How can warm water in the middle of the Pacific Ocean cause droughts in Australia, floods in South

America, and warmer winters in North America?

To help us make sense of this global phenomenon, we are joined today by Dr.

Robert, a leading climatologist and senior researcher at the Global Meteorological Institute.

Welcome to the show, Robert.

Thank you, Diana.

It is wonderful to be here with you and all the TalkCast listeners today.

This is a very timely topic.

El Nino is indeed one of the most powerful climate drivers on our planet, and understanding how it

works can help us better prepare for the unusual weather we might see in the coming months.

We are so glad to have you.

Let's start with the basics for our listeners who might be new to this.

What does the name El Nino actually mean, and where does it come from?

That is a great starting point.

The term El Nino actually means the little boy or the Christ child in Spanish.

It was originally named by Spanish -speaking fishermen along the coast of Peru and Ecuador back in

the 1600s.

They noticed that every few years around Christmas time, the ocean water became unusually warm and

the fish seemed to disappear.

Since it happened near Christmas, they named it El Nino.

Today, scientists use this term to describe a natural climate pattern characterized by the warming

of sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern tropical Pacific Ocean.

That is a beautiful name for such a powerful event.

So it starts with warm water in the Pacific.

But how does this warming actually happen?

What is the science behind it?

To understand El Nino, we first have to look at what happens during normal years.

In a normal year, we have strong winds called trade winds.

These winds blow from east to west across the equator, pushing warm surface water from South America

toward Asia.

Because all that warm water is pushed to the west, cool water from deep in the ocean rises up along

the coast of South America to replace it.

This process is called upwelling, and it brings a lot of nutrients to the surface, which is why

those waters are usually full of fish.

I see.

So normally, the warm water is pushed to the west, near Asia, and the cool water stays in the east,

near South America.

What changes during an El Nino year?

During an El Nino year, those trade winds weaken significantly.

Sometimes they even reverse and blow from west to east.

Without the strong winds pushing it westward, all that warm water starts to flow back toward the

east, toward South America.

This stops the cool, nutrient -rich water from rising up.

As a result, the entire eastern Pacific Ocean becomes much warmer than usual.

That makes perfect sense.

So, the winds weaken, and the warm water sloshes back to the east.

Now, I often hear scientists use another term alongside El Nino.

They call it ENSO.

Could you explain what that stands for?

Yes, absolutely.

ENSO stands for El Nino Southern Oscillation.

It is a bit of a mouthful, but it is actually quite simple.

ENSO is a single large climate cycle that has three phases.

The first is El Nino, which is the warm phase we are talking about today.

The second is La Nina, which is the opposite cold phase, where the trade winds are extra strong and

the eastern Pacific becomes unusually cold.

The third phase is the neutral phase, where everything is close to normal.

The southern oscillation part refers to the changes in air pressure and the atmosphere that happen

along with these ocean temperature changes.

It is a coupled system, meaning the ocean and the atmosphere are constantly talking to each other

and influencing each other.

ENSO is a coupled system.

I like that expression.

It is like a global dance between the ocean and the sky.

Now, according to the news, scientists are predicting that the El Nino forming right now could be

one of the strongest in recorded history.

Why is this particular event expected to be so intense?

Well, Diana, it comes down to several factors, but the primary indicator is just how warm the ocean

has already become.

Since early summer, sea surface temperatures in the key areas of the central and eastern Pacific

have been rising rapidly.

In some parts, they are several degrees Celsius above average.

This rapid warming is happening at a time when global ocean temperatures as a whole are already at

record highs due to climate change.

When you combine global warming with a natural El Nino cycle, they amplify each other.

It is like pouring gasoline on a fire.

The feedback loop between the warm ocean and the weak winds has become incredibly strong, leading us

to believe this will be an extreme event.

That sounds quite serious.

If this El Nino is indeed exceptionally strong, how will it change weather patterns around the world?

What should we expect to see globally?

The impacts are vast and depend heavily on where you live.

Let's start with South America.

Because the warm water is sitting right next to their coast, it creates a lot of evaporation and

rising air.

This leads to heavy rains and severe flooding in countries like Peru, Ecuador, and southern Brazil.

On the other side of the ocean, in places like Australia, Indonesia, and parts of Southeast Asia, we

see the exact opposite.

Because the warm water has moved away from them, there is less moisture in the air.

These regions often experience severe droughts, heat waves, and a much higher risk of devastating wildfires.

It is amazing how a change in one ocean can cause floods in one place and wildfires in another

thousands of miles away.

What about other parts of the world, like North America or Asia?

In North America, El Nino typically brings a wetter and cooler winter to the southern parts of the

United States, while the northern states and Canada experience a much milder and drier winter than usual.

In East Asia, a strong El Nino often leads to a warmer winter.

However, it can also disrupt the summer monsoon rains in the following year, leading to heavy

flooding in some river basins and droughts in others.

It really scrambles the normal seasonal expectations.

This must have a massive impact on daily life.

Beyond just the weather forecasts, how does an El Nino of this strength affect the average person?

It affects us in ways we might not even realize, especially when we look at our wallets.

For example, El Nino has a major impact on global agriculture.

When there are droughts in Southeast Asia, crops like rice, sugar, and palm oil suffer, which drives

up global food prices.

When West Africa experiences dry weather, cocoa production drops, making your favorite chocolate

more expensive.

Additionally, extreme weather can damage infrastructure, disrupt shipping routes, and increase

energy demands for heating or cooling.

So an average consumer might notice higher grocery bills and utility costs.

That is a very practical way to look at it.

Even our chocolate prices can be affected by the Pacific Ocean.

So how do you and other climatologists keep track of all this?

How do you know when an El Nino is starting?

We have an incredible network of high -tech tools today.

Decades ago, we had to rely mostly on ship reports, but now we have a specialized system called the

TAO slash Triton Buoy Array.

These are floating buoys anchored across the equatorial Pacific that constantly measure ocean

temperatures at the surface and deep underwater, as well as wind speeds and humidity.

We also use advanced satellites orbiting the Earth that can measure sea level heights and sea

surface temperatures with extreme precision.

When water warms up, it actually expands slightly.

So satellites can detect El Nino just by looking at how the ocean's surface rises. Wow.

Detecting climate patterns by measuring the height of the ocean from space.

Science is truly incredible.

Now, knowing that a strong El Nino is on the horizon, what can governments, industries, and ordinary

citizens do to prepare?

Preparation is key, and it starts with using these early warnings.

Governments can use our forecasts to manage water reservoirs carefully, preparing for droughts in

dry regions and reinforcing flood defenses in wet regions.

Farmers can adjust their planting schedules or choose crop varieties that are more drought -resistant

or flood -tolerant.

For ordinary citizens, it is about staying informed.

If you live in an area prone to winter storms or flooding, make sure your home is prepared.

If you are in a drought -prone area, practice water conservation early.

By acting early, we can significantly reduce the damage and economic loss.

That is very empowering advice, Robert.

It shows that while we cannot stop El Nino, we certainly have the tools and knowledge to adapt and

protect ourselves.

What a fascinating conversation.

It is truly mind -blowing to think about how connected our planet's systems are.
