It is a place known as the Peach Blossom Spring, or Tao Huayuan.

It is wonderful to be here with you and our listeners.

The Peach Blossom Spring is a text that is very close to my heart.

I remember reading it for the first time as a student, and its serene, rustic beauty immediately

captivated me.

It was written in the year 421 AD, during a period of relentless warfare and political instability.

relationship with nature.

When listeners hear this translation today, I highly recommend paying attention to the transition

from the narrow, dark cave to the sudden, breathtaking openness of the hidden valley.

It is a beautiful metaphor for finding inner peace.

That is beautiful, Claire.

I can already feel the magic of the story.

Well, without further ado, let us journey into this legendary paradise.

Claire, the floor is yours.

During the Taiwan era of the Jin dynasty, a fisherman from Wu Ling was making a living by fishing.

One day, he paddled along a stream, forgetting how far he had gone.

Suddenly, he came upon a peach blossom grove.

For hundreds of steps along both banks, there were no other trees except peach trees.

The fragrant grass was fresh and beautiful, and fallen petals lay in colorful profusion.

Marveling at this, the fisherman pressed on, wanting to see where the forest ended.

The grove ended at the source of the stream, where he found a hill.

In the hill, there was a small opening, through which a faint light seemed to glimmer.

He left his boat and entered through the opening.

At first, it was extremely narrow, barely wide enough for a single person.

After walking a few dozen paces, it suddenly opened up into a broad, flat valley.

The land was spacious, and houses stood in neat order.

There were fertile fields, beautiful ponds, and groves of mulberry and bamboo.

Paths crossed between the fields, and the sounds of crowing roosters and barking dogs could be heard.

People were coming and going, working in the fields, and both men and women dressed exactly like outsiders.

The elderly with yellowing hair and children with tufts of hair were all happy and content.

Upon seeing the fisherman, they were greatly surprised, and asked where he had come from.

He answered them in detail.

They then invited him to their homes, setting out wine and killing chickens to prepare a meal.

When others in the village heard of his arrival, they all came to inquire.

They told him that their ancestors had fled the chaos of the Qin dynasty, bringing their wives,

children, and fellow villagers to this isolated place, and had never left.

They had been cut off from the outside world ever since.

They asked what dynasty it was now, having no knowledge of the Han, let alone the Wei and Jin dynasties.

The fisherman related everything he knew, and they all sighed with regret.

The other villagers took turns inviting him to their houses, serving wine and food.

After staying for several days, he took his leave.

The villagers warned him, saying, it is not worth telling outsiders about us.

Once out, he found his boat and retraced his path, carefully marking the way at every turn.

When he reached the prefecture town, he visited the governor and told him what had happened.

The governor immediately sent men to accompany him, trying to find the marks he had made, but they

became lost and could never find the way again.

Lu Jiji of Nanyang, a man of high character, heard of this and eagerly planned to go.

But before he could accomplish it, he fell ill and died.

Since then, no one has ever inquired about the way again.

Thank you so much, Claire.

That was an absolutely mesmerizing reading.

Your voice perfectly captured the transition from the mysterious journey along the stream to the

tranquil, warm atmosphere of the village.

I particularly love the description of the paths crossing and the sounds of roosters and dogs.

It feels so vivid, yet so peaceful.

Thank you, William.

Yes, that specific imagery, paths crossing and the sounds of domestic animals, is incredibly

powerful in Chinese culture.

It represents the ultimate piece of rural life, far removed from the court intrigues and battlefields.

But the ending is always what haunts readers.

The fact that the fisherman marked his way, but could never find it again, suggests that paradise is

not a geographical location you can map out.

It is a state of mind, or perhaps a fleeting moment of grace. Indeed.

Once you seek it with greed or curiosity to show others, it vanishes.

It is a powerful lesson for our modern, hyper -connected lives.

Well, this brings us to an interesting question for our listeners today.

Do you think the Peach Blossom Spring was just a beautiful dream of Tao Yuanming?

Or does such a sanctuary actually exist within our own hearts?

Where do you go to find your own Peach Blossom Spring when the modern world gets too overwhelming?
