In this episode of TalkCast Talk, host Franklin takes us back to 1076 AD to explore one of the most famous Chinese poems of all time: Su Shi's 'Prelude to Water Melody' (Shuidiao Getou). Written during a night of drinking and deep longing for his brother, this masterpiece beautifully captures the connection between human emotions and the cosmic cycles of the moon. Join Franklin as he reads a poetic English translation of this ancient classic and discusses how its themes of love, separation, and philosophical acceptance still resonate with us today.

longing for someone far away?

It's a feeling that completely transcends time and space.

Well, today, we are diving into a masterpiece of classical Chinese literature that captures this

exact emotion with unmatched beauty and philosophical depth.

We are exploring the famous lyric poem, Prelude to Water Melody, written by the legendary Song

Dynasty poet, Xu Xia.

Now, to give you some context, Xu Xia was a true Renaissance man of 11th century China, a brilliant

statesman, calligrapher, and poet.

He wrote this piece during the mid -autumn festival in the year 1076.

At the time, he was politically exiled to a remote post, and he hadn't seen his beloved younger

brother, Zio, for seven long years.

Imagine that!

On a night meant for family reunions, he sat alone under the glorious moon, drinking until dawn.

In his drunken state, he picked up his brush and poured his heart out, bridging the physical

distance between him and his brother through the power of words.

The poem is a delicate balance of deep sorrow, cosmic curiosity, and ultimate acceptance.

So, without further ado, let us dim the lights and step into Xu Xia's moonlit world.

On the mid -autumn festival of the year Bing Chen, I drank joyfully until dawn and became very drunk.

I wrote this poem, while deeply missing my brother, Zio.

When will the moon be clear and bright?

With a cup of wine in hand, I asked the deep blue sky.

I do not know, in those celestial palaces on high, what year it is tonight.

I long to ride the wind and fly back there, yet I fear those jade towers and gorgeous mansions, for

the heights are too cold to bear.

Rising to dance and play with my clear shadow, how could it compare to life here in the human world?

The moon rounds the red chamber, stoops to peer through the carved window, shining on the sleepless.

It should bear no grudge, yet why is it always so round when people are parted?

Humans have sorrow and joy, parting and reunion, the moon has cloud and shadow, fullness and wane.

This has been imperfect since time began.

May we all be blessed with longevity, so that though miles apart, we can share the beauty of this

same moon.

Ah, that final line always brings a tear to my eye.

May we all be blessed with longevity, so that though miles apart, we can share the beauty of this

same moon.

It is just so incredibly comforting, isn't it?

Instead of drowning in bitterness over the separation, Susha elevates his longing into a shared

cosmic experience.

He reminds us that even if we are separated by thousands of miles, we are all looking up at the very

same moon.

明月。

It's a beautiful way to find connection in isolation.

I would love to hear your thoughts on this timeless piece.

So, here is my question for you today, when you look at the moon, who is the first person you think
