In the eastern market she buys a fine horse, in the western market a saddle and blanket, in the

At dawn she bids farewell to her father and mother, at dusk she camps by the Yellow River.

She does not hear the sound of her parents calling for their daughter, only the rushing waters of

At dawn she leaves the Yellow River, at dusk she reaches the Black Mountain.

She travels ten thousand miles to the war, crossing passes and mountains as if flying.
万里赴戎机，关山度若飞。
The northern air transmits the watchman's clapper, cold light shines on her iron armor.
朔气传金柝，寒光照铁衣。
Generals die in a hundred battles, warriors return after ten years.
将军百战死，壮士十年归。
Upon her return, she sees the Emperor, who sits in the Hall of Brightness.
归来见天子，天子坐明堂。
Her merits are recorded in twelve ranks, with rewards of over a hundred thousand.
策勋十二转，赏赐百千强。
The Khan asks what she desires, Mulan has no use for a High Minister's post.
可汗问所欲，木兰不用尚书郎。
She only wishes to ride a swift steed to take her back to her hometown.
愿驰千里足，送儿还故乡。
Her parents, hearing of her return, go outside the city walls to welcome her, supporting each other.
爷娘闻女来，出郭相扶将；
Her elder sister, hearing of her sister's return, dresses up by the door.
阿姊闻妹来，当户理红妆；
Her younger brother, hearing of his sister's return, sharpens his knife for the pigs and sheep.
小弟闻姊来，磨刀霍霍向猪羊。
Open the door to my eastern chamber, sit on my couch in the western chamber.
开我东阁门，坐我西阁床。
I strip off my wartime robe, and put on my old -time skirt.
脱我战时袍，著我旧时裳。
Facing the window, I arrange my cloud -like hair, looking in the mirror, I apply yellow powder.
当窗理云鬓，对镜帖花黄。
She goes out to see her comrades, they are all amazed and bewildered, we marched together for twelve
出门看火伴，火伴皆惊忙：同行十二年，
years, yet we never knew Mulan was a girl.
不知木兰是女郎。
The male hair's feet patter, the female hair's eyes are squinted, but when the two hairs run side by
雄兔脚扑朔，雌兔眼迷离；双兔傍地走，
side close to the ground, how can you tell if I am male or female?
安能辨我是雄雌？

Every time I read that final metaphor of the two hairs running side by side, it gives me chills.
